Full moons in the UK swing hard with the seasons in 2027. Seen from London, the Cold Moon of 13 December climbs to 65 degrees and the Beaver Moon of 14 November to 60 degrees, riding high on long winter evenings. The summer moons stay low: the Flower Moon of 20 May peaks at only 12 degrees and the Strawberry Moon, on the night of 18 to 19 June, at 11 degrees, skimming the southern horizon in the short summer night. The farther north you are, the lower these summer moons sit, so from Edinburgh or Lerwick they hug the horizon even more, while the long northern winter nights give the high winter moons more hours in the dark. For the best views pick October to February. For a low, golden moonrise behind rooftops or hills, June and July deliver.
Time zones
The UK keeps Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, UTC+0) until 28 March 2027, when clocks go forward to British Summer Time (BST, UTC+1). They go back on 31 October, so full moons from April to mid-October are given in BST. Only the Harvest Moon changes date against UTC: it is full at 00:04 BST on 16 September, while UTC still reads 15 September. Calendars on North American Eastern time also put the Strawberry Moon on 18 June and the Beaver Moon on 13 November, a day before the UK dates. North America changes clocks two weeks earlier in spring, so around the Worm Moon of 22 March the UK is only four hours ahead of Toronto and New York.

Local moon culture
The Harvest Moon still has a place in the British calendar. Harvest festival, also called the harvest home, is traditionally celebrated on the Sunday nearest the Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. In 2027 it rises over London at 18:46 on Wednesday 15 September and is full just after midnight, at 00:04 BST on Thursday 16 September. The church harvest festival most people know today goes back to 1843, when the Reverend Robert Hawker of Morwenstow in Cornwall invited his parishioners to receive the sacrament in bread made from the new corn. Older farm celebrations ended with a harvest supper, where corn dolls made from the last sheaf of the harvest were placed on the tables.
Long before harvest festivals, people in Britain seem to have watched the Moon from stone. The Calanais Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis were raised about 5,000 years ago, before Stonehenge, and the best guess of the body that cares for them is that they were a kind of observatory: every 18.6 years the Moon skims especially low over the hills to the south. At Stonehenge, English Heritage worked with researchers from the universities of Oxford, Leicester and Bournemouth and the Royal Astronomical Society during the major lunar standstill of 2024 and 2025, when moonrise and moonset swing furthest apart, to test whether the four Station Stones were deliberately aligned with the Moon. That question is still debated.
Where to watch
In November 2009 it became the first Dark Sky Park in the UK, with Gold Tier status. On a clear night more than 7,000 stars and planets are visible to the naked eye, and the Milky Way is usually easy to see.
Unveiled in December 2013 with Gold Tier status, it covers Northumberland National Park and most of Kielder Water and Forest Park. At 1,483 square kilometres it is one of the largest areas of protected night sky in Europe.
Eryri National Park became an International Dark Sky Reserve in 2015 and is counted among the darkest places left in southern Britain. On clear nights the Milky Way, the major constellations and shooting stars are visible above the mountains.
Set in Davagh Forest in the Sperrin mountains, it opened in 2020 as the first Dark Sky Park in Northern Ireland. The observatory has an outdoor viewing platform, and the ancient Beaghmore Stone Circles lie in the same landscape.

A penumbral eclipse only dims the Moon slightly. The eclipses of 18 July and 17 August happen while the Moon is below UK horizons. The next total lunar eclipse visible here is on 31 December 2028.
