In the sky

What you’ll see.

This full moon brings a penumbral lunar eclipse, when the moon slides through the pale outer part of Earth’s shadow. The dimming is faint and most people will not notice it. It is visible from the night side of Earth, roughly Europe, Africa and Asia. There is no total or partial lunar eclipse in 2027, so no blood moon this year. In the northern hemisphere the late winter moon still rides fairly high, rising in the east around sunset. At 363,296 kilometers it counts as a supermoon only under the broadest definition, and it will look like an ordinary bright full moon. It also falls near the middle of Ramadan and around the Lantern Festival that closes Chinese New Year celebrations.

Penumbral lunar eclipse. The eclipse peaks at 23:12 UTC, when the Moon is above the horizon in New York, Toronto, London, Lagos, Johannesburg, New Delhi, Singapore. A penumbral eclipse only dims the Moon slightly. See all eclipses of 2027.

Supermoon. At 363,296 km this full moon is within 90% of perigee for its orbit (threshold 365,424 km). Which full moons of 2027 count as supermoons.

The name

Why it’s called the Snow Moon.

Snow Moon is the traditional North American name for the February full moon, listed in the Old Farmer’s Almanac alongside names drawn from Native American, Colonial American and European sources. It refers to the heavy snow that often falls in February across the northern United States and Canada. Hunger Moon points to the hardship of late winter, when food stores ran low and hunting was difficult. Storm Moon and Bone Moon are also in use. Like the other traditional names, it describes northern hemisphere seasons and says little about a February night south of the equator.

Other names: Hunger Moon, Storm Moon, Bone Moon.

Southern hemisphere

In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

South of the equator February is late summer, so this full moon lines up seasonally with the northern hemisphere’s Sturgeon Moon of August. From Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America it crosses the northern sky at a moderate height, climbing a little higher each month as autumn and winter approach. South Africa is on the night side of Earth for the eclipse, while in eastern Australia and New Zealand it takes place in daylight, with the moon below the horizon.

Astrology

Full moon in Virgo: what it means.

In astrology, the full moon in Virgo faces the sun in Pisces, and the pairing is read as a conversation between order and surrender. Virgo is the sign of practical care, useful work, routines and details done well. Pisces sits opposite: imagination, compassion and the art of letting go. Under this full moon, the tradition suggests looking honestly at where perfectionism is wearing you down and where a little more structure would actually help. An eclipse on a full moon is often treated as a stronger marker for endings, so astrologers see it as a natural moment to finish or release something that has dragged on for too long.

Rituals

Three rituals for the Snow Moon.

  1. Clear one small space Choose a single drawer, shelf or folder and sort it completely. Keep what you use, pass on what someone else could use and let go of the rest. One job fully finished is very much in the Virgo spirit.
  2. Drop one obligation Look through your regular week and find one recurring task, meeting or commitment that costs more than it gives. Cancel it, shorten it or hand it over, then notice how the following days feel.
  3. Take five quiet minutes under the moon Go outside on either evening around the full moon and spend five minutes simply looking up, with your phone put away. Let your breathing slow down and name one thing, silently or out loud, that you are ready to finish.
