In the sky
What you’ll see.
On August 17, 2027 the Sturgeon Moon moves through Earth’s penumbra, the faint outer part of its shadow. A penumbral eclipse only dims the moon subtly, so most people will not notice anything unusual. The moon is above the horizon during the eclipse for the night side of Earth, roughly the Americas and the Pacific. It is the third penumbral eclipse of 2027 and closes an eclipse season that includes the total solar eclipse of August 2. In the northern hemisphere this late summer moon rides higher than the June and July full moons, though it still stays in the southern half of the sky, and it often rises large and orange above the eastern horizon.
Penumbral lunar eclipse. The eclipse peaks at 07:13 UTC, when the Moon is above the horizon in Honolulu, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, New York, Toronto, Auckland. A penumbral eclipse only dims the Moon slightly. See all eclipses of 2027.

The name
Why it’s called the Sturgeon Moon.
Sturgeon Moon is the traditional North American name for the August full moon, known from almanac tradition and linked to the large lake sturgeon of the Great Lakes, which were most easily caught in late summer. Other names include Green Corn Moon and Grain Moon, both pointing to the ripening harvest. Like the other almanac names, they describe the northern hemisphere calendar. In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America, August is late winter, and the first signs of spring are only just beginning to show.
Other names: Green Corn Moon, Grain Moon.
Southern hemisphere
In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America, the August full moon lights up late winter, the southern counterpart of the northern February Snow Moon. It still rides high on the long nights, though not quite as high as the June and July full moons. The Perseids are a northern show in any year: their radiant stays low or below the horizon from most southern locations, so the moonlight changes little for meteor watchers there.
Astrology
Full moon in Aquarius: what it means.
In astrology, the August 2027 full moon falls in Aquarius, opposite the sun in Leo. Leo is the sign of self-expression, creativity and the spotlight. Aquarius is the sign of friendship, community and the bigger system. The traditional theme is how personal ambition and shared goals fit together. Coming two weeks after the total solar eclipse at the Leo new moon of August 2, this eclipse full moon is read as the counterweight: after a new start centered on you, it asks what you contribute to the groups you belong to, and where you give up too much of yourself for them.
Rituals
Three rituals for the Sturgeon Moon.
- Give something back to a group Choose a club, neighborhood, team or community that has given you something. Do one concrete thing in return this week. Help out at an event, organize a small get-together, or introduce two people who should meet.
- Look at your month from a distance Aquarius likes to see things from above. Keep one evening free of plans and screens, then look over your calendar for the coming month as if it belonged to someone else. Ask yourself what you would advise that person to change.
- Watch the moon rise Find a spot with an open view to the east and be there as the sun goes down. Watch the Sturgeon Moon come up, large and often orange near the horizon, and stay until it has cleared the trees or rooftops. Use those quiet minutes to think about the people you share your life with.

Which night should I look at the Sturgeon Moon?
The evening of August 17 is the night of the full moon in the US, the UK, India and Australia. The moon also looks full on the evening before and after, rising in the east around sunset.
Can you see the lunar eclipse on August 17, 2027?
The eclipse happens, but it is easy to miss. The Sturgeon Moon of August 17, 2027 passes through Earth’s penumbra, the faint outer shadow, so it only dims subtly and most people will not notice a change. The moon is above the horizon during the eclipse for the night side of Earth, roughly the Americas and the Pacific. It is the last eclipse of 2027, and there is no blood moon this year.
Will the full moon spoil the Perseids in 2027?
Partly. The Perseid meteor shower peaks around August 12 to 13, 2027, four to five days before the Sturgeon Moon. On those nights a bright waxing gibbous moon lights up the evening sky and hides the fainter meteors. It sets a few hours before dawn, though, so the last dark hours before twilight give northern hemisphere observers the best chance of catching the brighter Perseids.
Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon?
The name Sturgeon Moon comes from North American almanac tradition and refers to the large lake sturgeon of the Great Lakes, which were most easily caught in late summer. The Sturgeon Moon of 2027 is also known as the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon, after the ripening crops. In the southern hemisphere, the August full moon falls in late winter instead.
