In the sky
What you’ll see.
The moon is invisible at new moon, lost in the glare of the sun with its unlit side facing Earth. Watch the western sky after sunset over the following evenings. In the northern hemisphere, spring evenings still tilt the moon’s path steeply above the horizon, so the young crescent is fairly easy to find a day or two later, often with earthshine softly lighting the dark part of the disc. Southern observers see it sitting lower in the autumn twilight. Without moonlight, the first week of this cycle offers dark skies for stargazing in both hemispheres.
The next full moon is the Pink Moon on April 20-21.
Astrology
New moon in Aries: what it means.
In astrology, Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, so the first new moon in Aries after the March equinox is traditionally called the astrological new year, the real start of the yearly cycle. Aries is linked with courage, energy and initiative. Intentions set now are less about plans and more about action: not thinking about a new routine but starting it, not polishing an idea but making the first rough version. The theme of this cycle is beginning before you feel ready and improving along the way. In the northern hemisphere the season agrees, as spring gathers speed.
Rituals
Three new moon rituals.
- Start it within a day Pick the plan that has been waiting on the shelf and take one visible action on it within the next day. Rough is fine: in astrology, Aries favors fast, imperfect starts.
- Set an intention to move Aries is traditionally associated with physical energy. Choose one kind of movement you enjoy for this cycle and put the first three sessions on your calendar right away.
- Make a short courage list Write down three things that feel a little daunting but that you want to do. Aim to cross off at least one of them before the next new moon.
