In the sky

What you’ll see.

The Harvest Moon becomes full on the night of September 15 to 16, depending on your time zone, and looks full on both evenings. With the sun near the equator, the full moon also sits close to the celestial equator, so it rises almost due east, sets almost due west and climbs to a middle height in both hemispheres. Its famous trick shows up in the north: in 2027 moonrise comes only about 20 to 30 minutes later each evening at mid-northern latitudes, and even less at the latitude of the UK, instead of the usual delay of about 50 minutes. Near the horizon it looks oversized and orange. At 399,341 km it is a little farther away than average, so this is not a supermoon.

How big and how bright?

The Harvest Moon is 399,341 km from Earth. Its disc measures 29.9 arcminutes against a 2027 average of 31.1, which is 3.8% smaller than average. The eye barely notices; a photo with the same lens does.

The name

Why it’s called the Harvest Moon.

Most full moon names belong to a month, but Harvest Moon belongs to a moment: it goes to whichever full moon lands closest to the September equinox. Before electric light, farmers in Europe and North America could keep bringing in crops after sunset under this moon. In years when the October full moon sits closer to the equinox, it takes the title and September’s moon keeps its older almanac name, the Corn Moon. Like all traditional moon names, this one follows the northern-hemisphere calendar, where September means harvest rather than spring.

Other names: Corn Moon, Autumn Moon.

Southern hemisphere

In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America, September is early spring, so this full moon lights the lengthening evenings of a new season rather than a harvest. Shift the northern names by six months and it matches the Worm Moon of thawing soil. The southern hemisphere had its own Harvest Moon on March 22, 2027. The rising trick works in reverse here: moonrise slips close to an hour later each evening, so early evenings turn dark again soon after full.

Astrology

Full moon in Pisces: what it means.

In astrology, this full moon falls in Pisces, opposite the sun in Virgo. Virgo is the sign of lists, routines and useful work, while Pisces stands for intuition, dreams, compassion and letting go of control. Tradition reads a Virgo to Pisces full moon as a harvest in two senses: what did your careful effort actually produce this year, and what did it do to you along the way? The theme is balance between doing and feeling. Astrologers often describe it as a good moment to finish what can be finished, forgive what cannot be fixed, and trust that some of the most important growth never shows up on a checklist.

Rituals

Three rituals for the Harvest Moon.

  1. Write your harvest list List what you brought in this year: finished projects, new skills, people who became part of your life. Put small things next to big ones, since both count.
  2. Keep a dream journal for a week Pisces is linked with dreams in astrology. Leave a notebook by your bed and write down the first thing you remember each morning, however vague it seems.
  3. Watch the moon rise in the east Find a spot with an open view to the east and be there around sunset on the evenings around the full moon. Notice how the orange disk turns silver as it climbs.

FAQ

The September 2027 full moon, answered.

What time is the full moon in September 2027?

The Harvest Moon is exactly full at 23:04 UTC on Wednesday, September 15, 2027. That is 19:04 EDT in New York (September 15), 00:04 BST in London (September 16), 04:34 IST in India (September 16) and 09:04 AEST in Sydney (September 16).

Which night should I look at the Harvest Moon?

The exact moment falls on September 15 in the US and September 16 in the UK, India and Australia, so the date depends on where you live. For viewing it hardly matters: the moon looks full to the eye on the evening before and the evening after, rising in the east around sunset.

Why is the September 2027 full moon called the Harvest Moon?

The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox, which falls on September 23, 2027. Around this moon, at mid-northern latitudes, the moon rises near sunset for several evenings in a row, giving farmers extra light to bring in crops. In 2027 the September full moon is clearly the closest, so it carries the name.

Is the Harvest Moon 2027 on September 15 or 16?

Both, depending on where you live. In the United States and Canada the Harvest Moon of 2027 becomes full on September 15, while in the UK, India, Australia and New Zealand it is already September 16. The moon looks full to the eye on both nights, so either evening is a good time to watch it rise.

Is the Harvest Moon 2027 a supermoon?

No. The Harvest Moon of 2027 is about 399,341 km from Earth, which is a little farther than the moon’s average distance. It will look like a normal full moon, though near the horizon it can seem huge and orange. That effect is the moon illusion combined with atmospheric scattering, not a change in the moon’s real size.
