In the sky

What you’ll see.

The Buck Moon is the most distant full moon of 2027, at about 406,000 km, which makes it a micromoon. January’s supermoon looks about 14% larger and up to 30% brighter, but without photos side by side the difference is hard to see. This moon also slips briefly through the edge of Earth’s penumbra, the faint outer part of its shadow. The eclipse is so shallow that the dimming is practically invisible, even from the night side of Earth, roughly Asia, Australia and the Pacific. In the northern hemisphere this summer moon stays fairly low in the south and often looks warm and golden as it rises. South of the equator it rides high in the winter sky.

Penumbral lunar eclipse. The eclipse peaks at 16:02 UTC, when the Moon is above the horizon in Johannesburg, New Delhi, Singapore, Manila, Sydney, Auckland. A penumbral eclipse only dims the Moon slightly. See all eclipses of 2027.

The name

Why it’s called the Buck Moon.

Buck Moon is the traditional North American name for the July full moon, found in almanac tradition and drawn from Native American and Colonial seasonal names. It refers to male deer, whose new antlers grow quickly in early summer, still covered in soft velvet. Other names include Thunder Moon, for the season’s frequent storms, and Hay Moon, for the hay harvest. In India, this full moon is also observed as Guru Purnima, a day to honor teachers. The almanac names follow northern hemisphere seasons: south of the equator, July is the middle of winter.

Other names: Thunder Moon, Hay Moon.

Southern hemisphere

In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America, the July full moon shines in the middle of winter, the southern counterpart of the northern January Wolf Moon. It climbs high on long, cold nights, more than 75 degrees above the horizon from Sydney, Cape Town and Buenos Aires. Australia and New Zealand are on the night side of Earth during the brief penumbral eclipse, although the shading is too faint to spot by eye.

Astrology

Full moon in Capricorn: what it means.

In astrology, the July 2027 full moon falls in Capricorn, opposite the sun in Cancer. Cancer is the sign of home, family and emotional safety. Capricorn is the sign of work, structure, ambition and long-term responsibility. The traditional theme is the balance between the two: what your efforts have built so far this year, and what they cost you at home. Arriving at the midpoint of the year, this moon is often read as a time for an honest halfway review. Astrologers traditionally give eclipse full moons extra weight, so this one is treated as a turning point for questions about career and family.

Rituals

Three rituals for the Buck Moon.

  1. Do a halfway review Answer three questions in writing: what am I really working toward, what has it given me so far this year, and what has it cost? Keep each answer to a few lines. Put the page away and read it again in December.
  2. Climb to a high point Capricorn is the mountain goat of the zodiac. Walk to the highest spot near you, a hill, a rooftop terrace or a bridge, and look out over the place where you live and work. Notice what looks different from up there.
  3. Clear your workspace Empty your desk or work corner completely and put back only what you actually use. Wipe the surface before anything goes back. A tidy structure around you makes it easier to think clearly about the months ahead.
