In the sky
What you’ll see.
In the northern hemisphere the April full moon rides lower than the winter moons, because a full moon mirrors the sun and the sun climbs higher each week. It rises a little south of east around sunset and stays up all night. The Lyrid meteor shower peaks around April 22, so bright light from a moon that is still nearly full will wash out all but the brightest meteors this year. At 383,421 kilometers it sits at an ordinary distance, neither supermoon nor micromoon. The only pink you are likely to see is a warm tint near the horizon, where atmospheric scattering turns a rising moon orange and the moon illusion makes it look larger than it really is.
How big and how bright?
The Pink Moon is 383,421 km from Earth. Its disc measures 31.1 arcminutes against a 2027 average of 31.1, which is 0.2% larger than average. The eye barely notices; a photo with the same lens does.

The name
Why it’s called the Pink Moon.
Pink Moon is the traditional North American name for the April full moon, popularized by the Old Farmer’s Almanac from Native American, Colonial American and European sources. It comes from wild ground phlox, also called moss pink, one of the earliest widespread wildflowers of spring in eastern North America. The moon itself does not turn pink. Other names include Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon and Fish Moon, all tied to new growth and returning life. Like the rest of the traditional names, they describe spring in the northern hemisphere, not the southern autumn.
Other names: Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon, Fish Moon.
Southern hemisphere
In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America, April is mid-autumn, and this full moon is the southern Hunter’s Moon, following the Harvest Moon of March. Seasonally it corresponds to the northern hemisphere’s Hunter’s Moon of October. With winter approaching, full moons ride higher in southern skies each month, and this one already climbs well up into the northern sky. Longer, cooler evenings make it easy to catch soon after dark.
Astrology
Full moon in Scorpio: what it means.
In astrology, the full moon in Scorpio faces the sun in Taurus. Taurus values comfort, stability and what you can touch, while Scorpio pulls toward depth, intimacy and what stays below the surface. This full moon falls on the very first degree of Scorpio, and the May full moon lands on the last degree of the same sign, so 2027 has two Scorpio full moons in a row. Astrologers read that as a two-part story: April opens a question about trust, attachment or something you have kept hidden, and May brings it to a close. Treat what comes up now as a first chapter, not the final word.
Rituals
Three rituals for the Pink Moon.
- Write it down, then let it go Write down something you have carried for months but rarely say out loud. Tear the paper up, or burn it safely in a fireproof bowl outdoors where that is allowed. In astrology Scorpio favors clear endings.
- Ask one real question Choose someone you trust and ask a question that goes deeper than how their week was, such as what worries them or what they are hoping for. Then listen without trying to fix anything.
- Keep your notes for May Whatever surfaces around this full moon is part one of a two-part cycle. Date your notes and put them somewhere safe, then read them again at the full moon of May 20, when the Scorpio story comes to a close.

FAQ
The April 2027 full moon, answered.
What time is the full moon in April 2027?

Which night should I look at the Pink Moon?
The exact moment falls on April 20 in the US and the UK and April 21 in India and Australia, so the date depends on where you live. For viewing it hardly matters: the moon looks full to the eye on the evening before and the evening after, rising in the east around sunset.
What date is the full moon in April 2027?
The Pink Moon of April 2027 falls on Tuesday, April 20 in the United States, Canada and the UK, and on Wednesday, April 21 in India, Australia and New Zealand, depending on the time zone. The moon looks full to the eye on both evenings, so either night is a good time to watch it rise in the east.
Why is it called the Pink Moon if the moon is not pink?
The Pink Moon name for the April 2027 full moon comes from wild ground phlox, a pink wildflower that blooms early in spring across eastern North America, and was popularized by the Old Farmer’s Almanac. The moon itself keeps its usual color, although low near the horizon it can look orange or golden because of atmospheric scattering.
Why are there two full moons in Scorpio in 2027?
The Pink Moon of April 2027 falls on the first degree of Scorpio and the Flower Moon of May 20, 2027 on the last. Between one full moon and the next, the sun moves a little less than the 30 degrees of a full sign, so two full moons occasionally fit inside the same sign. In astrology they are read as a pair.
