Two definitions
What counts as a blue moon.
The seasonal blue moon comes from the Maine Farmers’ Almanac. A season normally holds three full moons. When it holds four, the third is called the blue moon, so the last one can keep its usual seasonal name.
The monthly blue moon, the second full moon in one calendar month, started as a misreading of that rule in a 1946 magazine article and became the popular meaning. It depends on your time zone, because the date of a full moon does.
One caveat: the almanac tradition originally divided the year into four seasons of equal length. With equal seasons, the winter of 2026 to 2027 holds four full moons and February 20, 2027 becomes the blue moon instead. Most modern sources use the astronomical seasons, which is what this page does.
In 2027 northern spring runs from the March equinox on March 20 (20:24 UTC) to the June solstice on June 21 (14:10 UTC). Four full moons fall inside it, which makes the third one blue.
