In the sky
What you’ll see.
The Hunter’s Moon becomes full on October 15 in most of the world and on October 16 in eastern Australia and New Zealand. In the northern hemisphere it behaves much like the Harvest Moon: for a few evenings around full, moonrise comes only about 20 to 35 minutes later each night at mid-northern latitudes, so the moon appears in the east not long after sunset. In northern skies it rides higher than September’s full moon, a sign that winter moons are on the way. Near the horizon it looks large and deep orange. At 389,926 km it is slightly farther than average, not a supermoon. The Orionid meteor shower peaks around October 21 under a waning gibbous moon, so conditions are only fair.
How big and how bright?
The Hunter’s Moon is 389,926 km from Earth. Its disc measures 30.6 arcminutes against a 2027 average of 31.1, which is 1.4% smaller than average. The eye barely notices; a photo with the same lens does.

The name
Why it’s called the Hunter’s Moon.
Hunter’s Moon is not tied to a fixed month but to the Harvest Moon: it is simply the next full moon. The usual explanation is practical. Once the fields were cut, deer and other animals were easier to spot in the open stubble, and the bright evening moonlight gave hunters extra hours to stock up on meat before winter. Other traditional names for October’s moon include Travel Moon and Dying Grass Moon. All of these names come from the northern-hemisphere calendar, where October means falling leaves and shortening days.
Other names: Travel Moon, Dying Grass Moon.
Southern hemisphere
In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
South of the equator, October is mid-spring. In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America this full moon shines over lengthening days, and in South Africa and eastern Australia it arrives as jacaranda season gets under way. Shift the northern names by six months and it lines up with the Pink Moon of spring blossom. The southern Hunter’s Moon already came on April 20 to 21, 2027, depending on time zone. From these latitudes the October moon sits lower, in the northern part of the sky, and rises close to an hour later each evening.
Astrology
Full moon in Aries: what it means.
In astrology, this full moon falls in Aries, opposite the sun in Libra. Libra is the sign of relationships, fairness and weighing every option, while Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and stands for courage, initiative and acting on your own behalf. Tradition reads this pairing as the tension between me and we. Where Libra keeps the peace and waits for the perfect moment, Aries says: start. Astrologers often frame the Aries full moon as a nudge to take the first step on something you have been postponing, while staying honest about what you need from the people around you.
Rituals
Three rituals for the Hunter’s Moon.
- Take the smallest first step Pick the task you have put off the longest and do the tiniest possible action within a day: send the email, make the call, fill in the form. Momentum matters more than the plan.
- Watch the Hunter’s Moon rise Find an open view to the east and be there around sunset on the evening of the full moon or the one before. Watch the moon turn from orange to white as it climbs.
- Write a courage list Note three moments when you acted even though you were nervous. Keep the list somewhere you will see it the next time a hard step comes up.

FAQ
The October 2027 full moon, answered.
What time is the full moon in October 2027?
The Hunter’s Moon is exactly full at 13:47 UTC on Friday, October 15, 2027. That is 09:47 EDT in New York (October 15), 14:47 BST in London (October 15), 19:17 IST in India (October 15) and 00:47 AEDT in Sydney (October 16).
Which night should I look at the Hunter’s Moon?
The exact moment falls on October 15 in the US, the UK and India and October 16 in Australia, so the date depends on where you live. For viewing it hardly matters: the moon looks full to the eye on the evening before and the evening after, rising in the east around sunset.
Why is the October 2027 full moon called the Hunter’s Moon?
The Hunter’s Moon is the first full moon after the Harvest Moon. In 2027 the Harvest Moon falls in September, so the October full moon takes the name. Traditionally, harvested fields made animals easier to see, and the bright moonlight that rises soon after sunset gave hunters extra evening hours to prepare for winter.
What is the difference between the Harvest Moon and the Hunter’s Moon?
The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox, and the Hunter’s Moon is the one that follows it. In 2027 they fall on September 15 to 16 and October 15 to 16, depending on time zone. Both rise soon after sunset for several evenings in the northern hemisphere, which is why both carry farming and hunting names.
Will the Hunter’s Moon 2027 spoil the Orionid meteor shower?
Partly. The Orionids peak around October 21, 2027, about six days after the Hunter’s Moon. By then the moon is waning gibbous and still bright for much of the night, so fainter meteors will be hard to see. Conditions are fair rather than good, so face away from the moon and give your eyes time to adjust.
