In the sky

What you’ll see.

Because a full moon sits opposite the sun, the low November sun means a high full moon in the north. In 2027 the Beaver Moon rises in the northeast around sunset, rides high across the southern sky and stays up for most of the long night, higher than any full moon of 2027 except the December one. Near the horizon it glows orange and looks larger than it really is, an effect known as the moon illusion. At 378,754 km it is a little closer than average, but not a supermoon. The Leonid meteor shower peaks around November 17, just a few days later, so a bright waning moon will hide all but its brightest meteors.

How big and how bright?

The Beaver Moon is 378,754 km from Earth. Its disc measures 31.5 arcminutes against a 2027 average of 31.1, which is 1.5% larger than average. The eye barely notices; a photo with the same lens does.

The name

Why it’s called the Beaver Moon.

Beaver Moon comes from the traditional North American naming of the months, later passed on through farmers’ almanacs. Two explanations are usually given. In November, beavers finish their lodges and dams and store branches underwater before ponds freeze. It was also the season when trappers set beaver traps before the water iced over, to secure thick winter pelts. Frost Moon is another widely used name for the same moon. Like all traditional moon names, Beaver Moon describes late autumn in the northern hemisphere, not the late spring of the south.

Other names: Frost Moon, Mourning Moon.

Southern hemisphere

In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America, November is late spring, heading into summer. Here the Beaver Moon rises in the northeast and stays low in the northern sky, among the lowest full moons of the southern year, over short late-spring nights. Shift the northern names by six months and it matches the Flower Moon of May, a better fit for gardens in full bloom. It also spends fewer hours above the horizon than the high winter full moons of June and July.

Astrology

Full moon in Taurus: what it means.

In astrology, this full moon falls in Taurus, opposite the sun in Scorpio. Scorpio is the sign of depth, intensity and transformation, while Taurus stands for the body, the senses, comfort and steady values. Tradition reads a Taurus full moon as an invitation to slow down after a season of intensity and ask a simple question: what is actually enough? Astrologers often link it with appreciating what you already have, looking after your body and resources, and noticing the difference between owning things and being owned by them. It is framed as a moon of grounding and simple pleasures rather than big decisions.

Rituals

Three rituals for the Beaver Moon.

  1. Cook something slow Make a dish that takes its time, like a stew, soup or fresh bread, and leave your phone in another room while it cooks. Eat it slowly and pay attention to taste and smell.
  2. Count what is already enough Write down five things you use every day that genuinely make your life better. For one week, buy nothing new in those categories.
  3. Take a five-senses walk Go outside under the full moon and name one thing you can see, one you can hear, one you can smell and one you can touch. Walk slowly enough that you actually notice them.

FAQ

The November 2027 full moon, answered.

What time is the full moon in November 2027?

The Beaver Moon is exactly full at 03:26 UTC on Sunday, November 14, 2027. That is 22:26 EST in New York (November 13), 03:26 GMT in London (November 14), 08:56 IST in India (November 14) and 14:26 AEDT in Sydney (November 14).

Which night should I look at the Beaver Moon?

The exact moment falls on November 13 in the US and November 14 in the UK, India and Australia, so the date depends on where you live. For viewing it hardly matters: the moon looks full to the eye on the evening before and the evening after, rising in the east around sunset.

Why is the November 2027 full moon called the Beaver Moon?

The name comes from traditional North American moon names. In November beavers are busy finishing lodges and storing food before ponds freeze, and trappers historically set beaver traps before the water iced over. The Beaver Moon of 2027 carries that name worldwide, although it only fits the northern-hemisphere season: in the south, November is late spring.

Is the Beaver Moon 2027 on November 13 or 14?

It depends on where you are. In the United States and Canada the Beaver Moon of 2027 becomes full on November 13, while in the UK, Europe, India, Australia and New Zealand it is already November 14. To the eye the moon looks full on both nights, so either evening works for moonwatching.

Will the Beaver Moon 2027 affect the Leonid meteor shower?

Yes. The Leonids peak around November 17, 2027, only a few days after the Beaver Moon. By then the moon is waning gibbous and still very bright, so it washes out most of the fainter meteors. The Leonids are a modest shower in most years, and in 2027 only the brightest shooting stars are likely to be seen.
