Winter full moons pass almost straight overhead in South Africa. From Johannesburg the full moon of 20 May reaches 90 degrees, and June and July follow at 89 and 85 degrees, so the Moon lights the landscape from high above on long winter nights. Summer full moons stay much lower, at 38 degrees in November and 37 degrees in December. Durban, Gqeberha and Cape Town lie further south than Johannesburg and Pretoria, so the Moon sits a little lower there all year, most noticeably in summer, when it can hide behind mountains and buildings. For moonwatching, April to August combines high moons with long nights. The closest full moon of 2027, 357,635 km away, rises over Johannesburg at 19:15 SAST on 22 January.

Time zones

One time zone, and why dates differ.

South Africa uses South African Standard Time (SAST), two hours ahead of UTC, all year with no daylight saving, so moon times never jump by an hour. The February full moon at 01:24 SAST on 21 February, the April full moon at 00:27 SAST on 21 April and the September full moon at 01:04 SAST on 16 September all fall just after midnight, so UTC lists show the day before and the evening before is the one to watch. North American calendars also differ in June and November, showing the 18th and 13th, while South Africa has 19 June and 14 November. The black moon of 2027 falls on 31 August here, as in UTC lists.

A March Harvest Moon and ǀXam moon stories

Moon names on international calendars follow northern seasons, so in South Africa the Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, is the March full moon. In 2027 the equinox falls on 20 March and the full moon on 22 March at 12:44 SAST, the same day as the Human Rights Day public holiday, which moves to Monday because 21 March is a Sunday. The dates of Good Friday and Easter are set by the ecclesiastical moon, and in 2027 Good Friday is 26 March and Family Day is 29 March, both in early autumn. The September full moon that northern lists call the Harvest Moon comes here a week before the spring equinox.

In the 1870s ǀXam San narrators in Cape Town shared stories that Wilhelm Bleek and Lucy Lloyd wrote down and published in 1911, and several are about the Moon. In one, the Moon tells the Hare not to mourn his mother, because like the Moon she will return to life. The Hare refuses to believe it, the angry Moon splits his lip, and from then on people who die do not come back. The narrators also described greeting the new crescent with a prayer asking to share the Moon’s power of returning alive, and a hunting custom of not looking at the Moon after shooting game. These are the traditions of individual ǀXam narrators, not one belief shared by all San peoples.
