In the sky
What you’ll see.
At new moon the moon is lost in the sun’s glare with its unlit side toward Earth, so the last nights of October are free of moonlight. That makes this a fine week for dark-sky viewing, from the Pleiades rising in the east during the evening to the faint band of the Milky Way away from city lights. One or two evenings later the first crescent returns in the west after sunset. By Halloween a slim crescent may show low in the west at dusk. Northern observers need a clear, flat horizon to catch it, while southern observers see it noticeably higher.
The next full moon is the Beaver Moon on November 13-14.
Astrology
New moon in Scorpio: what it means.
In astrology, the new moon in Scorpio begins a cycle about depth, trust and transformation. Scorpio does not start with a blank page but with an honest one: what has to end before something new can take root? A Scorpio start is therefore traditionally a double ritual of closing and opening. Intentions that fit this cycle include breaking a habit for good, untangling a money matter or a shared commitment, and opening a conversation that has been simmering under the surface for too long. Tradition holds that whatever you dare to name at this new moon loses some of its grip on you.
Rituals
Three new moon rituals.
- Write down what ends On a sheet of paper, write what you are finishing with this cycle: the habit, the subscription, the old story about yourself. Then tear the paper up on purpose and throw it away.
- Ask the question you avoid Pick one question you usually steer around and write about it for ten minutes without stopping. Fold the page and read it again only at the next full moon.
- Keep a candlelit evening Spend one evening by candlelight or lamplight alone, without screens. Let the quiet slow you down enough to notice what you really want to begin.
