Full moon journal prompts: 52 questions for your 2027 moon journal
Key points
- In a moon journal, the full moon is the night to look back and let go, and the new moon two weeks later is the night to choose what comes next.
- One page per moon, headed with the date, the moon's name and its sign, plus three to five prompts, is enough to keep a journal going through 2027.
- Expressive writing and gratitude lists have measurable benefits in research, though a meta-analysis of 146 studies found the average effect is small.

Full moon journal prompts are questions for looking back: what happened since the last full moon, what you are proud of, what drained you and what you are ready to let go of. New moon prompts, two weeks later, look forward instead. Below are 30 full moon prompts, 10 new moon prompts and one prompt for each full moon of 2027, plus a simple way to keep a moon journal all year.
A notebook, a pen and 25 evenings in 2027: that is a moon journal. It asks very little, and the sky sets the appointments.
Why journal at the full moon and the new moon?
The lunar cycle has a simple shape. The new moon is dark and invisible, the starting point. About two weeks later the Moon is full, the high point, and then the light shrinks again. Many people read that shape as a story: plant at the new moon, see what has grown at the full moon, clear away in the weeks after. For a journal, that rhythm is a gift. At the new moon you choose a direction in a few lines; our guide to new moon intentions shows how. At the full moon you look back at what came of it.
You do not have to believe the Moon has anything to do with it. What does have evidence behind it is the writing. In 1986, psychologists James Pennebaker and Sandra Beall asked students to write for 15 minutes on four consecutive days, either about the most upsetting experiences of their lives or about superficial topics. That design became the basis for decades of research on expressive writing. A 2005 review by Karen Baikie and Kay Wilhelm sums it up: people who write about stressful or emotional events for 15 to 20 minutes on three to five occasions generally do better, physically and psychologically, than people who write about neutral topics. The same review is frank that writing usually brings a short-term dip in mood right afterward, and that it is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment.
How big is the benefit? A 2006 meta-analysis by Joanne Frattaroli pooled 146 randomized studies and found a positive, significant, but small average effect. Useful, not a cure.
Gratitude writing has a similar record. In the first of three studies by Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough, published in 2003, college students who listed things they were grateful for once a week felt better about their lives as a whole, were more optimistic about the week ahead, reported fewer physical symptoms and spent more time exercising than students who listed hassles. None of these studies involved the Moon. A moon journal borrows the method and gives it a date.
How do you keep a moon journal through 2027?
Keep it small and you will keep it going.
- One notebook for the year. Not an app, not loose sheets. On the first page, write down every full and new moon of 2027 from the printable moon calendar, so the appointments are fixed from the start.
- A fixed header. At the top of each page: the date, full or new moon, the moon’s name (Wolf Moon, Snow Moon) and the zodiac sign it is in. All of it is on each month’s page in the full moon calendar.
- One line about the night. What the Moon looks like (orange at moonrise, hidden by cloud, circled by a halo), the weather, how you slept. It makes the page readable months later.
- Three to five prompts, 15 to 20 minutes. That is roughly the dose used in expressive writing studies. Set a timer and stop when it rings, even mid-sentence.
- Reread the previous page first. This is the real secret. A single evening shows you a mood; six moons show you a pattern.
- A seasonal review. Around the equinoxes and solstices of 2027 (March 20, June 21, September 23 and December 22, in UTC), reread the last three months in one sitting.
On nights the page stays blank, start with facts rather than feelings (what you did, whom you saw, where you went), finish a half sentence such as “This month was mostly…”, or describe the Moon outside your window. After three sentences about the sky, you are writing.

One prompt for each full moon of 2027
Each full moon falls in a zodiac sign, and in astrology every sign carries a theme. If astrology is not your thing, treat it as a handy way to get a different question each month. The signs below are the Moon’s own sign at that full moon; what a moon sign means in a birth chart is explained in moon sign meaning. Dates apply in the Americas, the UK, India and Australia unless noted.
- January 22, Wolf Moon in Leo. The supermoon of 2027. Where do I want to be seen, and where am I still hiding?
- February 20 (February 21 in India and Australia), Snow Moon in Virgo. What will I finish this month, and what can honestly stay unfinished?
- March 22, Worm Moon in Libra. Which relationship feels out of balance, and what is my part in it?
- April 20 (April 21 in India and Australia), Pink Moon in Scorpio. What have I not dared to say out loud?
- May 20, Flower Moon in Scorpio. The seasonal blue moon, and a second Scorpio full moon. What has changed since April, and what am I still gripping?
- June 18 in the Americas (June 19 in the UK, India and Australia), Strawberry Moon in Sagittarius. Where do I want to go, on a map or in my head, and what is stopping me?
- July 18 (July 19 in Australia), Buck Moon in Capricorn. What am I working so hard for, and is it still worth it?
- August 17, Sturgeon Moon in Aquarius. Where do I swim against the current, and where do I fit in just to belong?
- September 15 in the Americas (September 16 in the UK, India and Australia), Harvest Moon in Pisces. What has 2027 given me so far, and what can I simply feel without fixing it?
- October 15 (October 16 in Australia), Hunter’s Moon in Aries. Where am I waiting for permission I could give myself?
- November 13 in the Americas (November 14 in the UK, India and Australia), Beaver Moon in Taurus. What truly gives me rest, and how much of it do I get?
- December 13 (December 14 in Australia), Cold Moon in Gemini. Which conversation do I need to have before 2027 ends?
Your first entry of the year is the Wolf Moon of January 22, and your last is the Cold Moon of December 13. Every date and local time is in the full moon calendar 2027, the new moon evenings are in the new moon calendar, and you can subscribe to the full moons so the reminder lands on your phone. The Moon will show up either way; all you need to do is open the notebook.
FAQ
Quick answers.
What should I write in my journal on a full moon?
Use the full moon to look back on the month since the last one and to name what you are ready to let go of. Good starting prompts: what happened since the last full moon, what am I proud of, what drained my energy, what am I done with and what am I grateful for. Three to five prompts are enough for one evening.
What are good new moon journal prompts?
New moon prompts look forward. Try: what do I want to be different by the next full moon, which word fits the coming four weeks, what is the smallest step I can take within three days, and what will I say no to this month. Pick two or three and keep your answers short.
How do I start a moon journal?
Take one notebook for the year and head each page with the date, full or new moon, the moon's name and the zodiac sign it is in. Answer three prompts in fifteen to twenty minutes, and next time read the previous page before you write. The dates and signs for 2027 are on this site.
Does journaling actually help?
Research on expressive writing, which began with psychologist James Pennebaker in the 1980s, finds that writing about emotional experiences can improve mood and health, but the average effect across studies is small. Gratitude lists have similar modest benefits. Journaling is a useful habit, not a replacement for professional help.
